Skipper John Dane III, with Sally Barkow as Celebrity Tactician, took top honors at Nantucket Race Week's Celebrity Invitational (Aug. 18-19, 2011), sailed in International One Design sloops in warm but windy conditions on Nantucket Sound.
Dane (Pass Christian YC, Mississippi) sailed as a Corinthian helmsman, but he's of celebrity stature himself, having countless sailing accomplishments, including as U.S. representative in the Star class at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Barkow, a top women's keelboat sailor (Beijing Olympics, 7th; contender for 2012) and John's wife, Leslie, were rounding errors in the half-ton crew weight that also included former America's Cup 12 Meter grinders Billy and Kyle Smith.
The Dane/Barkow team narrowly held off a three-peat by Jim Bishop Jr. (American YC) at the helm, with Dave Ullman as Celebrity Tactician and current IOD world champ Elliott Wislar aboard. Size matters. So does talent. The heft and deep experience aboard both of the top two boats meant the series was undecided until last race was finished, when only three points separated Dane/Barkow and Bishop/Ullman.
Co-skippers Heather Gregg-Earl and Richard Werdiger, with Dee Smith as tactician, took third. Peter MacCausland (Nantucket YC) with Peter Holmberg, followed by Carlo Falcone (Antigua YC) with Mike Toppa, rounded out the top five.
Underscoring the level of competition, two of the top five from 2010, locals Bob Constable (with Mark Reynolds), and Sen. John Kerry (with Gary Jobson) finished out of the money in the deepest field ever for the seven year old highlight of Nantucket Race Week.
The fourteen boat fleet generated $60 thousand to benefit Nantucket Community Sailing.
